    After his graduation in 1950, Castro began to practice law and became a member of the Cuban People’s Party. He became their candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives from a Havana district in the elections scheduled for June 1952

    In July 1953, Castro led about 120 men in an attack on the Moncada army barracks in Santiago de Cuba. The attack failed, many of his men were killed, and Castro was sentenced to 15 years in prison, then they released Castro 2 years later.

    Castro began to organize a rebel force for the task in 1953, after legal means failed to dislodge Batista’s new dictatorship. On July 26, 1953, he led about 160 men in a suicidal attack on the Moncada military barracks in Santiago de Cuba in hopes of sparking a popular uprising. Most of the men were killed, and Castro was arrested.

    On December 2, 1956, Castro and 81 armed men arrived in Cuba. Only Fidel, Raúl, and Ernesto Che Guevara, and a few others, survived against the Batista forces. With the help of revolutionary volunteers, Fidel Castro’s army defeated some of the Batista forces. They launched a propaganda campaign to get support from Cubans.

In return, U.S. President John F. Kennedy publicly said he would take American nuclear weapons out of Turkey.
