Fidel Castro was born in Biran, Cuba, on August 13, 1926. Although, some say that he was born a year later. He was the third of six children and his parents were Lina Ruz González and Ángel Castro.

Fidel went to a private Jesuit boarding school. He grew up as a wealthy child. Fidel was also mentally gifted, but strangely, he was more interested in sports than studies.

In 1948, Fidel got married to Mirta Diaz Balart. They had 1 child and named him Fidelito. This marriage exposed Fidel to a even wealthier lifestyle.

On January 3, 1961, president Dwight Eisenhower broke off relations with the Cuban Government. Fidel declared Cuba a socialist state. The next day 1,400 Cuban exiles invaded the Bay of Pigs.

During 1965, Fidel joined Cuba’s communist group. He brings his rebel organization to also join the group. Then, makes himself leader.

Over a period of a few years in the mid seventies, Fidel opened 10,000 new schools. He also brung the literacy rate up to 98%. Fidel was rewarded for this and then he gave a speech.

Later, in the late 1970’s, Fidel promoted himself as the leading speaker for third world countries. He did this by supplying military support to pro-soviet forces. This was in Angola, Ethiopia, and Yemen.

In 1991, Fidel’s revolution starts to lose momentum. There was less cheap oil imports and soviet markets for Cuban sugar and other goods. 85% of Cuba’s markets were disappearing.

In 2006, Fidel’s health begins to deteriorate after having abdominal surgery. He decides to temporarily step down. After stepping down temporarily, he decides to step down for good and hands the government control over to his brother, Raúl.

2 years later, in 2008, Fidel decided to stop. He stepped down from being president. He gave his brother, Raúl, the role of being the president.
