Federalism in the United States: A look at federal history and where it is today.

  • Federal Government is Planned

    Federal government is planned- Constitutional delegates create an idea for new government a government where power is held by both state and national government. Political representatives assembled together to create a plan that would establish the government that was desired.

    Intense Nationalism

    Intense Nationalism- With the political struggle, a rise in nationalism occurred, various people demanded a strong nationalist government. This was outbreak of nationalism led to the beginning a new government designed to keep federal and state powers intact.
  • The New Federal Government

    After new the constitution became ratified; the new federal government would go into effect. The new federal government would take its first steps in running the country. The new federal government would work to keep governing powers under control.

    Gibbons v. Ogden

    A supreme court trial that defined how much power the federal government has to restrict power from individual states and to regulate commerce. Gibbons v. Ogden decided that federal government has ultimate power over interstate commerce.

    The American Civil War

    A conflict between the federal government of the north states against the seceding southern confederacy. The attempt made to leave the American union had failed and the brutal war came to an end. The results of American civil war allowed the federal government to keep its control and its authority over the southern states.

    The New Deal

    President Franklin Delano Roosevelt expanded the authority of the federal government so they can provide social services and they can manage the economy. The new deal provided relief and reform during the great depression. The new deal programs would help the struggling an economy and end the long depression.
  • School Desegregation

    President Dwight D. Eisenhower calls for federal troops to protect nine African American students enrolling to Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This was one of the first attempts to unite public schools, sending federal troops was to prevent violence from those opposed to desegregation.

    The Great Society

    President Lyndon B. Johnson launched the “great society”, a program designed to eliminate poverty within cities and to end racial injustice. Johnson’s “great society” plan was to be the ideal vision for how a modern society should look. Everyone is treated with fairness, everyone has a home, and everyone has good life.
  • Devolution Revolution

    A republican controlled congress would approve handing over control of federal government programs to state and local officials. Individual states would be able to control programs established by the federal government. The republican controlled congress saw devolution revolution as a solution to problems but there were issues with the concept itself.
  • Education’s Executive Order

    Donald Trump signs a controversial executive order that was designed to remove federal government from K-12 education and extends powers to local and state officials. Trump made a campaign promise that he would restore powers of education to local officials but his executive orders involves controversial figure Betsy Devos and the order could abolish educational progress that was made with the help of federal government.
