    Dole served as the first and only president of Hawaii after he and others overthrew Queen Liliuokalani. Grover Cleveland was the president of the U.S that annexed Hawaii as a state in 1898. One of the Doles cousins later become the attorney general of Hawaii and another one of his cousins founded the Dole Food Company in Hawaii.

Publishers Pulitzer and Heart newspaper deliberately sensationalized the news; depicting the Spaniards as murderous and brutes in order to sell newspaper, having medias reaction outraged Americans and embarrassed Spain. This Technique became known as yellow journalism.

The panama canal symbolized U.S technological process and economic power, The U.S protected the rebels when they took action in return the U.S got control of a 10 mile strip. 51 mile length took 10 years to complete, at a cost of thousands of lives and $400 Million.
