Events of the Hungarian war of Independence

  • 11th of September

    The Austrian army led by Jelacic crossed the Hungarian border.
  • A missed opportunity

    A revolution broke out in Vienna, however the Hungarian troops did not react because there were no executive power.
  • Battle of Schwechat

    Móga eventually reached Austria by the end of October, but Windischgratz defeated him in the Battle of Schwechat.
  • Battle of Mór

    Windischgratz started a large-scale campaign against Hungary which was succesful. The Hungarian army lost the Battle of Mór. Kossuth ordered the evaluation of Debrecen (at that time it was the capital), and Batthyány tried to cooporate with Windischgratz, but he was arrested.
  • The Manifesto of Vác

    Görgey Arthúr offered peace in exchange of acknowliging the April laws, but the Emperor refused it.
  • Battle of Kápolna

    Hungarian lost.:(
  • The Spring Campaign (2nd April - 21st March)

    The main aim was to recapture Buda, which was succesful and happened between 4-21 May. Hungary had around 50000 soldiers, and almost the whole coutry was liberated.
    After the victories the Hungarian parliament proclaimed the Declaration Of Independence which meant the dethronement of the Habsburg dynasty.
  • The Battle of Temesvár

    After the Spring Campaign Francis Joseph visited Nicholas I.(the Russian tsar) and he got russian support which ment an army with 200000 men. The fisrt critical lost of the Hungarian army was at Temesvár.
  • 10-11th of August

    The government resigned and Kossuth gave dictatorial power to Görgei in order to prevent responsibility.
  • Világos

    Görgei surrundered to the Russian army, which is important because it meant that the Russian defeated him not the Habsburgs. He was captured by the Russians, and that way he prevebted to be executed by Haynau.
  • The martyrs of Arad

    Batthyány and 13 other generals were executed at Arad and thousonds of people were imprisoned, and the remained Hungarian soldiers had to serve in the imperial army far from their home.
