1525 -1866 The middle passage was a passage that was how slaves kidnapped in Africa would come to the US. The impact was that this was the way slaves made it to the US, also conditions on the ships were horrid, many slaves shacked and beaten. Death rates were high on ships. Slaves ship captions and slaves were involved. This event shows the suffering slaves had. Up too 12 1/2 million slaves would be forced to make the journey. -
It started somewhere between 1780 to 1800, it continued for as long as there was need. The underground railroad was a series of safe houses which "conductors" would help take slave to the new safe houses once they escaped the plantation. This journey would take them to the North to be free. This affected slave owners, the people in the underground and slaves. This invent allowed slaves to live free lives where they would sometimes become members of the underground or of such in order to help. -
1794 The Cotton Gin was an revolutionary invention. In order to lower the amount of workers need on a farm the cotton gin made the tedious work of separating cotton from the seeds much easier. This exploded the American economy and affected plantation owners and slaves. This takes place in most cotton plantation of the south. -
This instead of decreasing the amount of slaves and workers needed did the opposite, making the demand for slaves to increase as people wanted to make more money after seeing how profitable the trade was. -
- The Missouri Compromise that was passed in the US congress. When Missouri applied to become a State their was a equal balance of free and slave states, so this state could tip the balance. So a compromise was made, Maine would be made a free state and Missouri would be a slave state. The compromise also banned slavery below the 36°30′ line.

- Slaves lead by Nat Turner went on a rebellion that killed 60 white people in Virginia. The state government retaliated by executing 56 slaves for involvement. The fear caused by the rebellion led to laws banning education and ability to assemble for slaves. This affected the slave owners and the rebels.

- This was a horrible moment, where slaves that were free were ruled by congress as escaped slaves. This meant that owners that had escaped slaves in the north that become freeman could be taken back to the South. The thing is the North wasn't to pro-Slave so this lead to a major increase in abolishment supporters. This also made the underground network more efficient. - The book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe shows the terrible truth of living as a slave. It follows the character Uncle Tom which goes and end up with a very bad slave owner that beats him a lot. The book became an instant best seller, being just behind the bible at that time. People seeing the horrors began to support the anti-slavery people. 1854-1859. Senator Stephan Douglas proposed a bill where the new states Kansas and Nebraska would be allowed to vote if they want to be a slave state or not. He thought this would resolve the large dispute between the groups of people. As a result large numbers of pro slavery supporters and anti-slavery supporters came in. As a result lots of violence would start. Then when the election came a lot of armed "border ruffians" showed up. -
With intimidation and illegal votes, pro-slavery legislators were voted in. As a result the Northerners and anti-slavery supporters created their own set up their own government. But the President only recognized the pro-slavery. After a lot of violence, mostly lead by John Brown created another vote which the pro-slavery people won. October 16, 1859. John Brown with a small army of 22 people decided to try to try to take an arsenal at Harpers Ferry with the largest stockpile of guns in the south. If he is successful with giving the guns to local slaves, he would be able to lead a huge slave revolt in the south. After gathering a few hostages, word spreads and he soon get surrounded. At October 17 a company of US marines easily overwhelm him. -
- In the North he is praised as a hero, but in the South he was seen as a terrorist. He was trialed and sentenced to death, his last words were "I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood." January 1, 1863. Lincoln announced the Emancipation Proclamation to get better moral high ground and to increase moral in the states. It was a huge win for slaves as the Union was somewhat of their savoir now. The Emancipation Proclamation stated that all slaves held in the rebel slave states are free. This also helped keep Britain and foreign influence even more out due to the war being about morals. -
There was a exception that slave states that were in the union (Border states) weren't forced to free their slaves. This affected the slaves a lot, with a lot of them joining the army.
