Evaluation Question 7

  • Period: to

    Thriller Research

    • Began researching the Thriller genre by looking at other film opening title sequences.
  • Formed Groups

    Formed Groups
    • Formed our group 101B.
    • Began planning our film by creating a mind map and collaborating our ideas which had been inspired by watching other Thriller films.
  • Preliminary Exercise

    Preliminary Exercise
    • Practiced using the camera and working together as a group by filming a short sequence as an introduction to the concepts and practical application of film continuity, applying techniques such as 'shot, reverse, shot' and keeping the 180o rule.
    • Doing this was very rewarding as it gave us a taster of how we were going to work together in the future, as well as helping us see each of our team member's individual skills so that we could delegate our tasks to the appropriate people.
  • Preliminary Exercise

    Preliminary Exercise
    • After editing our prelim piece, we evaluated what we thought went well and how we could improve when shooting our final OTS
    • The exercise went well and helped teach us the filiming techniques we were going to need, as well as other key skills such as creating our storyboards whilst keeping our camera's location into consideration, and writing up a shot list of all of the different things we were going to need to film.
    • Being new to filming, I think it really helped to teach us how it worked,
  • Planning Our OTS

    Planning Our OTS
    • Now that we had a bit of experience with the cameras, we could begin to plan our Thriller OTS much more thoroughly, keeping aspects such as mise-en-scene in mind to help convey the genre as well as the narrative of our film.
    • We planned by creating a storyboard, going out to recce locations, creating a shot list and gathering together different costume and prop ideas.
  • Filming Our OTS

    Filming Our OTS
    • Overall I think our filming day was a success. I am proud of our graphic match shots as I think that they make the OTS much more interesting rather than just using cuts between scenes for the whole sequence.
    • After viewing our rushes we decided that we did not need to reshoot anything as we were happy with what we had. I think a few improvements could have been made if we had filmed a bit more of our antagonist, however it wasn't something that was necessary.
  • Editing Our OTS

    Editing Our OTS
Final Cut- Because we had done our preliminary exercise and gained some experience in gfilming and editing, it was easy to edit our OTS as we had filmed it with continuity in mind,
    - We explored different transitions such as cross fades and played with the colours by desaturating it and giving some scenes a yellow tint. We added this creativity as it was something we had picked up on being common in the Thriller genre when we had been researching similar films.
  • Evaluation

    Evaluation
Evaluation- Overall I think my skills and knowledge of film making have improved a lot over the coursework period. Not only do I now know how to use a camera techniqually, but I have more knowledge of what looks good when watching a scene (such as placement of characters, props, location...), how to edit according to continuity, and how to make sure your narrative comes across in an OTS without giving it away.
    - If there was anything I would do differently next time, it would be to use a few more shots.
  • Summary

    Summary
I feel as though I now know a lot more about not only the Thriller genre but the way that the film industry works, as well as the technical aspects of how filming works. I am now a lot more confident with using equipment such as the cameras and the editing software, and I am looking forward to being able to use and further improve my skills in the future.
