Hassan al-Bana founded the Muslim brtherhood in Cairo, Egypt. Being an activist, his initial attempts to modernize Egypt resulted in misinterpretations of the Islamic law. In Decemeber, conflict between society and the monarchy reached its climax when the organization of the Muslim Brotherhood sent volunteers to Israel to fight. The following February al- Banna was shot on the way back from a negotiation and died from his wounds.

Although Mohammed Naguib was declared the first president along with the republic, Nasser holds the real political power and eventually takes over. However, political parties are banned. Nasser intended to take control of the Muslim and Arab world. He did for a small amount of time.

UAR stands for the United Arab Rebublic. The union existed because Syria was on the brink of a political communist takeover. The union proved unworkable, and the nations divided in 1961. The unificationof the nations ranked the 25th largest empire ever

Jordan forsaw war, so they prompted a Defense Pact to the president of Egypt, Nasser, against Israel. Nasser immediately accepted the treaty and Iraq signed as well. Their army was head by an Egyptian general, but regardless of their preparatins they were caught in a surprise attack by the Israel air force. Jordan and Egypt returned the attack but failed and were eventually pushed back.

The UAR was replaced by the Federation of Arab Republics. It consisted of Egypt, Syria, and Libya. This change transformed Egypt gradually from a monarchy to a democracy. Along with a change of the government, the flag slightly changed its color scheme.

The new Egyptian leader, Sadat, traveled to Israel to discuss new diplomatic relations. He then went to Washington D.C. to sign the peace treaty. The Arab League did not like this, so they banned Egypt from the league. Although, Sadat won the Nobel Peace Prize before being assasinated.

The killing was a methodically planned by Islams. The shooting was on a Monday at the Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, Egypt. There was about 6 rifles. The reasoning behind the attack is still unknown.

Prior to this date, Egypt's nuclear program had been suspended. It was revived in 2006. The government stated that within 10 years a 1,000 megawatt nuclear power station. The program was funded by foreigners.

The civilian uprisings started because of the president. He had been in office for 30 years (the longest time ever than any other president). He was part of the democratic party and civilians suspected that the elections were manipulated. It was nicknamed the Lotus Revolution. Demonstrations were also seen in surounding countries like Syria and Libya.

Mubarak stepped down in response to revolts. The riots had been going on for about 18 years prior to the step down. Some argued that the government faced considerable future problems. Regardless, they citizens screazmed "God is great!"
