  • Egypt declared a Republic

    After a military coup in 1952, Muhammed Najib, the leader of the coup, becomes president of Egypt. He officially declares Egypt as a republic. This gave the people power over who was to be their leader. The leader they chose stayed in power for many decades, unlike our government. LINK
  • Egypt and Syria form alliance

    In an attempt to form a united Arabia, Egypt and Syria join to form U.A.R. This was otherwise known as the United Arab Republic. However, only a short time later, Syria, following a military coup, dropped out of the U.A.R. Egypt remained until it took the name Arab Republic of Egypt. LINK
  • The Six day War

    The six day war between Israel and neighboring Arab countries was a successful attempt by Israel to defend against immanent attack by Syria, Egypt, and Jordan. Israel took the Sinai peninsula, Gaza strip, Golan Heights, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank of the Nile River. The capture of new lands proved to be a problem for Israel in controling rebellions of the near 600,000 Arabs now under Israeli administration.   • Egypt Signs Treaty of Friendship with Soviet Union

    The Treaty of Friendship continued diplomatic relations between Egypt and The USSR. The USSR had already helped Egypt in the Arab-Israeli war. The Soviet Union at the time was trying to influence Egypt into socialism. The USSR also helped Egypt in the development of desert regions. LINK
  • Israel and Egypt sign a peace treaty

    The treaty between Israel and Egypt was signed at the White House in Washington D.C. Jimmy Carter, the president at the time, had the two prime ministers meet at the White House many times, attempting to get them to come up with an official treaty. The treaty ended the war and established diplomatic relations between the two countries.   • Temple of Hatshepsut Shooting

    70 people were killed by six gunmen on the steps of the Temple of Hatshepsut. The gunmen were said to be from an Islamic militant group who has been trying to over throw the Egptian government for many years. Police killed all six gunmen in an intense firefight following the massacre. The attack is expected to have great effect on the Egyptian economy which is heavily intertwined in the tourist industry.

  • Sinai Hotel bombings

    Violence out of Israel flows into Egypt. 30 people were killed and hundreds injured after car bombs went off infront of three Egyptian hotels. The bombs collapsed some of the hotels, trapping dozens under the rubble. The intent of the attack was to kill Israeli tourists staying in Egypt. LINK

  • Egyptian Ferry sinks, killing 1000 people.

    On the way back from Saudi Arabia, a passender ship carrying 1,400 people sank in the Red Sea. Among the 1,400, only 400 survived. High winds were said to have been the cause, whipping up large waves that the ship could not handle. Boats like this one, called a roll on, roll off, have been know to unreliable in heavy surf. Link
  • Hosni Mubarak Steps down from office

    After 18 days of protest, Autocrat Hosni Mubarak steps down from his role as dictator of Egypt. He had ruled Egypt for close to 30 years. Once he stepped down the military stepped in and assumed rule over the country. The protest resulted in the death of hundreds of civilian protestors. Link
  • President Morsi removed from office

    Massive nationwide protests calling Muhammed Morsi to quit forces the military to kick himout of office. The Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic political group, argues against the military coup. Interm President Mansour's plans for an election are being rejected by Brotherhood members in Parliament. The Muslim Brotherhood would eventually become known as a terrorist group. LINK
