    Hero

Designed first heat engine. A metal sphere connected by pipes to a container of water. As the container is heated, the waters boils and steam is ejected from the nozzles. It is called a reaction turbine.
  • Papin

Designed first heat engine. Used pistons. Heat was used to create steam, and coldness to cool it off. When the condensation happens, a vacuum is created.
  • Savery

Invented first successful steam-powered pump, which used to pump water of mines. This pump could life water only 6 m and so it wasn't very efficient. It is related to a pump jack, and no pistons were used.
  • Newcomen

Used steam as the driving force. The boiler produced steam and forced the piston up the cylinder. When the cold water sprayed on the outside of it, the steam would condense and the piston would move back down. It resembles a pump jack and used pistons.
  • Watt

Steam engine that had a separate condenser so that the boiler cylinder remained hot. This reduced the amount of heat needed to operate the machine, making it much more efficient. They were very large though, and needed big boilers to create steam. They also were very inefficient at converting heat to useful energy, This resembled a pump jack, and pistons were used.
