FIRST ABOLITIONIST GROUP FOUND IN THE U.S. The group's name was Pennsylvania Abolition Society, and they were the first group to have called for an end to slavery in the U.S.
THE DRED SCOTT DECISION. The U.S. Supreme Court rules (7–2) that a slave (Dred Scott) who had resided in a free state and territory (where slavery was prohibited) was not thereby entitled to his freedom. This drew the nation closer to civil war.
The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is founded. This group led several campaigns especially to limit violence against African Americans.
