What are the decomposition rates of different items?
  • Procedures

    Procedures
    Dig 8-10 inches deep
  • Hypothesis

    Hypothesis
I believe the orange will decompose the most.
    Apple-25% Foil-0% Newspaper-75% Orange- 95%
Styrofoam cup- 45% Normal Chip Bag- 15% Cotton-10%
  • Materials and Equipment

    Materials and Equipment
Materials- apple, foil, newspaper, sun chip bad, orange, styrofoam cup, normal chip bad, cotton shirt Equipment- shovels, wooden stake, super hammer, marker tape, rebar stakes
  • Conditions of Decomposing

    Conditions of Decomposing
When it's cold and dry it wont decompose as much, but in warmer weather it decomposes more so some of our items should decompose alot
  • Weather

    Weather
Mornings are chilly around 45 degrees and it starts to warm up later on in the day.
The winds a pretty low this week. There is alot of humidity ths week too! Overall its turns out to be a nice and sunny day this week.
  • Styrofoam Conclusion

    Styrofoam Conclusion
The styrofoam didnt decompose that much i thought i would alot, but it did some so I assumed it decomposed about 5%.
  • Styrofoam

    Styrofoam
is used for building materials like pipe insulation
    prevents soil problems
you can recycle it by droping it off to the city
Just wash it out and u can reuse alot
you can reduce by using plastic bottles or someother recycled material
  • Weather

  • Aluminum Foil

    Aluminum Foil
Aluminum foil is made from an aluminum alloy which contains between 92 and 99 percent aluminum.
It is used to manufacture thermal insulation for the construction industry, insulation for storage tanks, decorative products, and containers and packaging.Annual production of aluminium foil was approximately 600,000 tonnes. It is a highly recycled material. you can recycle it at any recyleing places...
  • Foil Conclusion

    Foil Conclusion
The fiol didn't decompose at all. It stayed the same as we started with it except the color is different partly. It decomposed 0%
  • Sun Chips Bag

    Sun Chips Bag
SunChips bags are now made with plants so they're compostable and better for the planet. They are amking new bags that don't make as much noise this fully biodegradable bag is said to be able to decompose over 14 weeks when placed in a hot active soil
  • Sun Chips Bag Conclusion

    Sun Chips Bag Conclusion
The sun chips bag is not different at all, it just got more dirty than before i say it composed 0%.
  • Weather

    Weather
This weeks weather is pretty cold during the mornings, but it warms up later on. The average temperature is around 70 degrees. This week it's really windy and the not much humidity!
  • Regular Chips Bag

    Regular Chips Bag
You can't recycle chips bags because first it is the material the bag is made of and secondly, it's very oily . You can reduce chips bags if you just don't eat chips. I don't think you would like to reuse chip bags because it's really oily.
  • Regukar chips bag

    Regukar chips bag
The sun chips bag didnt decompose at all. It decomposed 0%

  • Apple conclusion

    Apple conclusion
The apple decomposed almpst all the way. i assumed it would decompose alot because it's a fruit. It had a weird smell and it turned brown
  • Paper

    Paper
Paper recycling is the process of recovering waste paper and remaking it into new paper products. You can recycle paper by putting paper and a recyle bin in a classroom. You can reduce paper by useing the ront and back of the paper and not just one side. You can reduse paper by use the paper more than twice and not just throw it away if you mess up.

  • Paper conclusion

    Paper conclusion
The paper really didnt do tha much, i thought it would decompose quite a bit. It decomposed about 10 percent i think and the color kinda faded.
  • Cotton

    Cotton
You can Reduce cotton by not growing cotton , or not by materials made by cotton. You can reuse cotton by giving your cotton clothes to chariety . Cotton is almost pure cellulose, which is a principal constituent of paper. The first modern industrial paper making processes used old cotton articles to make paper. The sources quickly ran out, so they started recycling old paper, too, and using wood pulp

  • Orange

    Orange
The skins of oranges, lemons, tangerines and other citrus fruits don't have to end up in the trash bin. Citrus peels can be recycled and reused in the home and garden. Besides adding them to the compost pile, consider other practical and creative ways to recycle both fresh and dried citrus fruit skins.
Use dried orange peels in the fireplace; as fire starters, they burn longer than wood shavings and smell fragrant too.
