My father purchased one of the first consumer model VHS players, which was high technology at the time. Most other consumers were purchasing the BetaMax, but he was able to predict the format that would take hold and purchased a VHS player.

At age 6 I became interested in playing with and typing on my grandmother's IBM Electronic Typewriter. It didn't have a screen, and was not a "word processor," but it had electrical mechanics that enabled one to type with little pressure on the keys.

My brother earned a first generation Nintendo for his room after achieving a certain score on a spelling test that was being used as a fundraiser for 5th grade outdoor education.
-
Some close family friends purchased a personal computer (PC) for their home. This was my first experience with a computer of this type, as in not an Apple 2E
-
The Apple IIe computer was in my classroom and we played educational games like Oregon Trail, and a space themed Disney game. These were role playing style games, that involved reading, typing, and almost no animation. The display was green/black monochrome.

This was one of the first handheld gaming devices, and can be viewed as foreshadowing the current wave of nano-technology.

My parents purchased a Tandy computer for me from Radioshack. It was meant to be a Christmas gift, but they gave it to me when it was purchased in November. My brother had had various game consoles and cable TV in his room for some time, and I had nothing, so I was given a computer. The Tandy computer had DOS as its' shell, but it also ran the Tandy operating system.
-
I used the Tandy computer daily to communicate with other computer users through peer to peer connections made over the phone line through a modem, on Bulletin Board Systems or BBSs that were hostd on other people's computers. I could chat with the host of the BBS or post in forums to communicate with other users. I also used software to learn to type and created documents with Printshop and my dot matrix printer during this period. I also learned to navigate using the DOS command line

My friends and I created a magazine using the photocopying machines at Kinko's and some documents typed on computers, but the pages were assembled by cutting/pasting actual paper, then photocopying.

The Tandy comupter in my room was replaced with a Windows based PC that was purchased from a local computer shop.

As part of my anti-establishment, rebellious, adolescent perspective, I vowed to never use the internet.

I took a class at UOP on creating/recording music with computers. I used Finale and Logic Audio on a Macintosh computer. I had been recording in studios for the three years prior, and found the ability to record and produce on my own exciting and liberating
-
After studying Music Education at UOP, I transfered to SSU and earned a BA in Music with an emphasis in Musical Composition and Recording Technology. I learned to use computers to record, produce and publish music.
-
Immediately after graduating from SSU, I began working as an IT/AV Systems Administrator at Copia the American Center for Wine, Food and the Arts. I was trained to support a Windows 2000 domain and trouble shoot end user problems. I also worked with audio and video equipment in support of concerts, cooking shows, films, and special events and lectures

After using an older Apple laptop from the SSU IT department, I purchased an iBook G4 for my own personal use.
-
In 2006 I left the SSU IT department to work as a musci teacher because I was not fulfilled by working solely in technology. I have continued to use technology and teach Music Technology, but do not maintain my IT knowledge, as I am not interested in technology for technolgy's sake.
-
I taught this intrductory course in Music Technology at SSU for the first time in the Spring of 2007. I am teaching it for the third time now, in the fall of 2014.
