The beginning of 7th grade was the first time I ever had to change schools. Before then, I went to the same school from preschool to 6th grade. I remember being nervous about moving to an unfamiliar building with new people.

Shortly after I turned 16, I started working at a pizza place. I was so nervous to start something completely new. I remember thinking how big of a responsibility it was to start working.

In the middle of my sophomore year of high school, I switched to a new school where I knew no one. I was not successful in the environment of my first high school. This change proved to help me better understand myself as a student, and what I needed to be successful.

High school was not the most pleasant experience for me. I remember always wishing I could hurry up and graduate. By the time graduation arrived, I was terrified for the next steps in life, but I was ready for something new.

During my first year of college, I wasn't sure what I wanted to study, but I genuinely enjoyed being in classes and learning in an environment that supported opportunities to be independent.

I walked for graduation before completing my student teaching. On that day I remember being terrified and excited about what was ahead for me professionally. I knew that I wanted to teach, but when and where that would happen for me was a complete mystery.

Before I was completely finished with my student teaching, the opportunity arose for me to apply and interview for a long-term substitute position as an elementary special education teacher for the remainder of that school year. This opportunity brought on fear of the unknown, but also a lot of excitement. It has also led me to where I am today professionally.
