    British Mandate
    At the end of World War II the League of Nations gave Britian control over the mandate of Palestine and required Britain to create a Jewish homeland there. The international community was sympathetic to the Zionist cause after the horrors of World War II were revealed. Britain handed this task to the UN who proposed to divide Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state.
  • Birth of Israel and First War

    Birth of Israel and First War
    Jewish leaders declared the birth of the democratic State of Israel on May 14, 1948. Ben Gurion later became Irael's first prime minister. The day after, armies from Arab countries, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Irael causing the first Arab-Israeli war. Arab armies were defeated.
  • Six-Day War

    Six-Day War
    Expecting an Arab attack, Irael struck first. Launching air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Israel quickly invaded lands with a large Palistine population like the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem.
  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War
    Egypt and Syria, detemined to win their territory back started the Yom Kippur War. It was a suprise attack against Irael on the Jewish holiday. Israel was not prepared causing Egypt and Syria to be successfull until U.S. troops joined Israeli forces. Arab countries refused to sell oil to any countries supporting Israel, including the United States.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    The Egyptian president Sadat decided in 1977 that he wanted peace with Israel. U.S. president Jimmy Carter invided Sadat and the Israeli prime minister to Camp David to dicuss peace terms. They reached an agreement known as the Camp David Accords and ended 30 years of hostility between Egypt and Israel.
