    In 1967 Egypt demanded that the UN remove its troops from Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula. Egyptian troops moved into the Sinai, and Egypt began to close off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's route to the Red Sea. Expecting a large attack from the Arabs, Israel decided to strike first

    Yom Kippur War
    Wanting to win back their territory, Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur war, a surprise attack against Israel in 1973. The war is named after a Jewish holy day when the attack began.
  • A peace treaty

    A peace treaty
    In 1977, the Egyptian President Anwar Sadat made a momentous declaration: Egypt wanted peace with Israel. To help facilitate this historic piece, U.S. President Jimmy Carter invited Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to Camp David, the Presidential Retreat in Maryland. There Sadat and Begin reached an agreement known as the Camp David Accords.

    In 1987 Palestinian resentment of Israeli occupation boiled over into a rebellion called the Intifada. The fighting continued until the early 1990's.
