    Independence and the First Arab-Israeli War
    The first Arab-Israeli war in the conflict started on May 15,1948. Just one day after David Ben-Gurion and other Jewish leaders declared the birth of the democratic State of Israel, armies from Arab countries of Egypt, Syria Lebanon, Transjordan, and Iraq invaded Israel. Because of this invasion, the Arab state that was supposed to exist never came into existence and left the Israelis were left with a victory.

    War in 1967 and 1973
    Thinking that they were going to be attacked by Arabs on June 5 1967, Israel launched several attacks against Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Arab forces coming to close off the Gulf of Aqaba in the Six-Day War. Another victory for Israel, they won more land including the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Determined to take their land back, Egypt and Syria launched the Yom Kippur War against Israel in 1973. With U.S. support, Israeli won once again.
  • A Peace Agreement

    A Peace Agreement
    The first Arab nation to recognize Israel's right to exist was made officially on September 17, 1978 by Egypt. Egyptian president Anwar Sadat and Israel prime minister, Menachem Begin were invited to Camp David and reached an agreement there known as the Camp David Accords. Egypt then recognized Israel and returned the Sinai Peninsula. Most importantly though, the treaty ended 30 years of hostility between the two nations.
  • Intifada

    Intifada
    Because of settlement building by Israel in the West Bank and Gaza, tension built up, causing the first intifada that lasted from 1987 to 1993. This Palestinian resentment involved widespread street violence; Palestinian youths battled against Israeli troops. The Oslo Accords ended this tragedy, but extremists kept peace limited. As a result, in 2000 another intifada began and only ended with the death of Yasser Arafat, the leader of the PLO.
  • Gesture Towards Palestinians

    Gesture Towards Palestinians
    With Yasser Arafat's death followed Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon's decision that Israel would withdraw from Gaza and parts of the West Bank. With that, the second intifada ended and Palestinians gained control of Gaza.
