    The creation of Israel
    The UN proposed to divide Palestine into a Jewish state and an Arab state with Jerusalem under international control. Although Arab leaders rejected it, the UN general assembly passed a resolution supporting the partition as valid. After the British left Palestine, Jewish leaders and David Ben-Gurion declared the birth of the democratic State of Israel on May 14,1948.
  • Six-Day War

    Six-Day War
    When Egypt closed off the Gulf of Aqaba, Israel's route to the Red Sea. Israel launched air strikes against Egypt, Syria, and Jordan. Because of Egypts action they expected a large-scale Arab attack and decided to strike first.

  • Yom Kippur War

    Yom Kippur War
    After the Six-Day War Israel took control of the Golan Heights, Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, and East Jerusalem. Egypt and Syria were determined to win their territory back. So they launched the Yom Kippur war, a surprise attacked against Israel in 1973.
  • Camp David Accords

    Camp David Accords
    In 1977 the Egyptian president Anwar Sadat made a momentous declaration: Egypt wanted peace with Israel. To help facilitate this historic peace Jimmy Carter, the U.S. president invited both leaders to the presidential retreat in Maryland. In 1978 Sadat and Begin reached an agreemnt. Egypt recognized Israel and returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The treaty also known as the Camp David Accords ended 30 years of hostility between Israel and Egypt.
  • Intifada

    Intifada
    The Palestinian uprising against Israeli occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The rebellion consisted of Palestinian youth battling Israeli troops in widespread street violence. And when negotiations were made to end the violence, extremists on both sides worked hard to undermine the peace process.
