Computing timeline

  • invention of the first keyboard

The first keyboard was invented in 1868 by Christopher Sholes.
  • Period: to

1st generation of computers: Vacuum Tubes

The first computers used vacuum tubes and magnetic drums for memory, and were often huge taking up whole rooms. They were very expensive and heated up quickly causing many problems.
  • Period: to

    Second Generation of computers: Transistors

Transistors replaced vacuum tubes. The transistor was invented in 1947 but was not used until the late 1950s. The transistor was mush better than the vacuum tube, allowing computers to become smaller, faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient and more reliable. Although much easier than the first generation computers, they still heated up and caused problems.
  • The internet was created

    The internet was created
The internet was created in the late 1960s. This was a very big invention.
  • Period: to

    Third Generation.Integrated Circuits

The development of the integrated circuit was the hallmark of the third generation of computers. Transistors were made smaller and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers.
  • first laptop

  • Period: to

    Fourth Generation. Microprocessors

The microprocessor brought the fourth generation of computers, as thousands of integrated circuits were built onto a single silicon chip. What in the first generation filled an entire room could now fit in the palm of the hand. In 1981 IBM introduced its first computer for the home user, and in 1984 Apple introduced the Macintosh. As these small computers became more powerful, they could be linked together to form networks, which eventually led to the development of the Internet.
  • Invention of the iphone

    Invention of the iphone
The iPhone (retroactively labeled the original iPhone, iPhone 1) is a smartphone that was designed and marketed by Apple Inc. It is the first generation of iPhone and was announced on January 9, 2007.
  • Period: to

Fifth Generation (Present and Beyond) Artificial Intelligence

Fifth generation computing devices, based on artificial intelligence, are still in development, though there are some applications, such as voice recognition, that are being used today.
  • invention of the qwerty keyboard

    invention of the qwerty keyboard
In 1875, Christopher Sholes rearranged the keyboard to make the qwerty keyboard.
