  • First Computer Bug

    The first recorded computer bug is found in a Navy Mark II computer system. This bug was a physical bug found stuck in a relay in the computer.
  • Self-Replicating Programs

    John von Neumann devises a theory of self-replicating programs.
  • AT&T begins Monitoring Phones

    AT&T first beigins monitoring their phone lines. The initial reason for this was to detect people who used "blue boxes," a small deviced which allowed them to make illegal free phone calls.
  • UNIX

    AT&T Bell Laboratories introduced the UNIX operating system.
  • Xerox PARC Worm

    The first known worm was discovered at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center. This worm as non-distructive but instead utilized unused processor cycles for more efficient computing.
  • The Brain

    The first known PC virus is released which was eveloped by programmers in Pakistan and known as "The Brain."
  • Pretty Good Privacy

    Philip Zimmerman releases the Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption program.
  • I Love You

    The "I Love You" virus affects millions of computers.
  • Code Red

    The Code Red worm is launched and infects millions of Windows NT and Windows 2000 computers. Infected machines were used to attack the White House web site.
