Computer History Timeline

  • Complex Number Calculator

    Complex Number Calculator
In 1940, the Bell Telephone Laboratories created the CNC, designed by designer George Stibitz. This machine stunned gcorwds in New York City when Stiblitz demonstrated the calulating abillity of this machine/computer/calulator. I chose this devise becuase it demostrated the remote access of computing.
  • Standards Eastern Automatic Computer

    Standards Eastern Automatic Computer
The National Bureau of Standards assembled the SEAC in a laboratory in Washington. They were testing components and systems for setting computer standards. The SEAC was the first computer to be the first stored-program computer in the United States of America. I chose this topic becuase it was the first computer to program information, code subroutines, numerical data, and output.
  • TRADIC

    TRADIC
In 1955, two computer programer Felker and Harris programed th first fully transistorized computer, which operated completely on transistors instead of vacuum tubes. Transistors enabled the machine to run on fewer than 100 watts, which is one-twentieth the power compared to vacuum tubes. I chose this inmportant date in computer history becuase it offered to world a more efficient way to operate computers.
  • IBM 1301 Disk Storage Unit is released

IBM 1301 Disk Storage Unit is released
On June 2nd, 1961, IBM released the 1301 Disk Storage Unit, enabling this storage unit to hold over 28 million characters on the disk. The disk rotated at 1,800 R.P.M, and could be leased for $2,100 per month, or could be bought out for $115,500. This read and write arm for each disk is still used in today's disk drives. I chose this device becuase it was one of the first publicaly sold storage systems.
  • IBM Photo Digital Storage

    IBM Photo Digital Storage
In 1967, IBM delivered the first photo-digital storage device to teh Lawernce Livermore National Laboratory. This new system could read and write and read data up ot a trillion bits of information. I chose this event becuase it's one of the first advances towards digital technology.
  • The TV Typewriter

    The TV Typewriter
The TV Typewriter, designed by Don Lancaster, provided the first display of alphanumeric information on an ordinary television set. It could generate and store 512 characters as 16 lines of 32 characters. A 90-minute cassette tape provided supplementary storage for about 100 pages of text. I chose this becuase it was one of the first prototypes towards a personal laptop
  • Flexible Disk Drive

    Flexible Disk Drive
In 1978, the flexible disk drive was introduced by Shugart Associates. IT was requested by Wang Laboratories to so it could be small enough to fit into a desktop computer. I chose this becuase it was one of the first advances towards secondary storage.
  • Apple Lisa

    Apple Lisa
In 1983, Apple indrouced Lisa, the first personal computer with a graphical user interface, which ran on a Motoral 68,000 microprocessor, and came equipped with 1 megabyte of RAM. With a 12 inch black and white monitor, floppy disks, hard drive, and the Xerox Star, which included a system called smalltalk that involved a mouse, windows, and pop-up menues. I chose this becuase it was the first basic laptop.
  • Pixar's "Tin Tin"

    Pixar's "Tin Tin"
Pixar's "Tin TIn", became the first computer animated fil to win the Academy Award. They created it in 3-D scenes, using light sources, cameras, atmospheric effects, and other information. I chose this becuase it was the first advance towards featured animation.
  • The Iomega Zip Disk

    The Iomega Zip Disk
IN 1994, the Iomega Zip Disk was released. It allowed 100MB to be stored on a cartidge roughly the size of a 3 1/2 inch floppy disk. I chose this becuase it was the biggest storage capcity on the market.
