Computer History

  • ENIAC

    ENIAC
The first electronic, large-scale, and general pupose computer was called ENIAC. It was a lage machine and was reprogrammable. It helped perform initial calculations for the H bomb and perform other military and scientific calculations.
I included this because it was very important for developing computers.
  • The William's Tube

    The William's Tube
Manchester Baby created an altered cathode-ray tube that would store data. This invention dominated the computer feild for years. I included this because the William's Tube was revolutionary and vital for modern computers.
  • Vaccum Tubes

    Vaccum Tubes
Around 1951 new technology started being created. Vaccum tubes are electrical and allow electrons to move more freely. The major research and development occured throughout the '50s. I included this because vaccum tubes were used in some other breakthrough computers.
  • UNIVAC

    UNIVAC
The first commercial computer was the UNIVAC. There were 46 original UNIVAC's that were developed for business and government use. I included this because it was one the very first commercial computer that was for the public.
  • Computer Mouse

    Computer Mouse
Douglas Engelbart invented the computer moue, and changed computers from machinery that scientists had to be trained to used, to a user-friendly model.
I think this is important because without him we may not have easy to use computers.
  • Fairchild Camera and Instument Corp.

    Fairchild Camera and Instument Corp.
The first standard metal oxide semiconductor.
I think it's important because it helped lead us to the standard, modern motherboard.
  • Components

    Components
Intel's 8008 microprocessor was shown to the world. It was able to compute lower case letters, upper case letters, all 10 numberals, punctuation, and a variety of other symbols.
I think this is important becaue the microprocessor was able to convert more of the computer language into human language.
  • Apple Computers

    Apple Computers
The Apple II had a printed circuit motherboard and was an instant sucess. When the computer was connected to a color T.V. the computer had color graphics.
I think this is important because it was a great advancement.
  • Shugart ST506

    Shugart ST506
It was the first hard disk drive for microcomputers. It held five times as much information as the standard floppy disk at the time, and it was the same size.
  • Word

    Word
Microsoft announced Multitool and Windows. But Window's wouldn't be produced until 1985.
I think this is important because we use Windows and Word all of the time.
