    Slaves from the Caribbean
    When Columbus, who originally promised gold, came back to Spain, he brought with him slaves from the Caribbean because he didn't to come back with nothing. Queen Isabella was surprised by this and said that they cannot be enslaved. As a result, they were freed and able to go back home.

    Slaves from South America
    Portuguese explorers took around 200 Native Americans from along the coast of South America and sold them in Cádiz, Spain as slaves because they saw that the Spanish people and Columbus brought back Native Americans to Spain. There were no problems that arose from this.

    The Portuguese arrived in Brazil under the leadership of Pedro Álvares Cabral and that was the first time Brazil was "discovered". When the Portuguese were there, the indigenous people became interested in their iron tools and religion. Later, other nations wanted to conquer lands in Brazil.

    African Slaves in Brazil
    The Portuguese thought that Indians were "too fragile" to be doing work in the plantations so they decided to bring in African slaves. Brazil got 40% of Africans that came to the Americas. The slaves worked in sugar plantations and eventually in gold mines and diamond fields. For an amount of time, the demand for slaves was constantly increasing.

    King Louis XIV wanted to increase his power and income from his overseas empire. So, he ordered people to see what was happening in New France which was in the Americas, he told soldiers and more settlers to go to North America. This made the population increase, but still smaller than the other colonies.

    20 Africans along with a Dutch man arrived at Virginia, the 20 Africans were prisoners taken from a Portuguese slave ship. This would then lead to the beginning of slavery there.

    Swedish, German and Dutch stockholders created the New Sweden Company so they can trade for furs and tobacco in North America. The company's first expedition came from Sweden and they arrived in Delaware Bay, and the settlers built a fort. In the next couple of years more Swedish people came to America.
