Attlee was the prime minister of Great Britain after WWII. He created the National Health Care Service which provided heath-care to Bitish Citizens. He also brought of Englands largest industries under state control. He also granted India independace. Attlee was also the leader of the Labor Party which increased government influence in Great Britain. -
Churchill Gives "Iron Curtain Speech"
Churchill uses the term Iron Curtain to describe the political, social, and military divide between democratic wet side of Europe and the Socialist east side of Europe. -
Brussels Pact
The UK, France, Holland, Belgium, and Luxembourg enter mutual defence pact designed to stop the spread of communism. -
NATO Formed
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A new defence pact which included North America. The democratic counter part to the Warsaw Pact. -

Labor Party
This Party Focused on the interest of trade union and the working class of England. In the past it has been a large supporter of Democratic socialism. In the 50s, after a large defeat in the General Election, the party started moving towards the right end of the spectrum. In the 60s, the party pushed for social and educational reforms such as the leganilation of homosexuality and abortion. In the 70s, the party fell in and out of popularity, loosing support from many unions and workers. -
Suez Crisis
Israel invades Egypt after the Egyptian president announced the nationaization of the Suez Canal. The Bristish and the French back Israel which almost caused the Soviet Union to join. -

While an engergy crisis grips the whole world as international relation start to melt down, the UK starts export oil from the north sea. Its also a time of resession in the UK, lasting 14 quarters. -

Margret Thatchers Term As Prime Minister
Came to power in the Conservative party in 1979 and became Prime Minister when the party won general election. She spent her term privatising state controled industries which, in turn, decreased inflation but increased unemployment. -

Falklands War
This was a result of a conflict between Argentina and Britain over who controlled the islands. While no one offically declared war, around 900 were killed. The conflict also boosted Margret Thatchers political career, as well as the popularity of her party. -
