Berlin Blockade
Soviet Union wanted to stop the US, Great Britain and France from going to their respective sectors. The Soviets blocked all railroad,roads and canal access. Roughly 2.5 million people had no medicine or basic necessities. Western powers began airlifts to help the civilians. Roughly 2.3 million tons of supplies were given and the blokade came to a end. -
Korean War
North Korea who was supported by the soviets invaded South Korea. North Korea soon fell under the influence of the soviet union. Many countries sent troops to help the US and korean troops. -
Vietnam War
Pitted the communist government of North Vietnam and it's allies South Vietnam and the USA fought to stop communism. The soviets and China dumped supplies into North Vietnam to help win the war. Both sides used many different traps to stop either side from advancing. -
U-2
The U-2 Incident was were a US spy plane was shot down by The Soviet Union. The soviets viewed this as a act of aggression and the USA said they had no clue about a flight occurring. The USA apologized and promised no more flight would take place. -
Cuban Missle Crisis
This was a stand off between the US and Soviet Union.It was about the installation of Nuclear Weapons on Cuba. JFK said they would be putting a naval blockade around cuba. The USA and Soviet Union agreed to move the misses to not cause war. -
Suez Canal Crisis
Began when Israeli forces pushed into egypt towards the canal, which is very important and controlled 2/3 of the oil used in europe. Israelis were joined by french and british troops which hurt the US relationships. -
Yom Kippur War
This war brought the USA and the Soviet Union close to war. Egypt and Syria attacked Israel at the same time on the two fronts. They crossed the Suez Canal and then Israeli turned to the USA for aid which President Nixon sent airlifts to help the Iranians. -
Space Race
Just like the Arms Race there was a space race. This was to see who could successfully get to space first.In 1958 the US launched their first satellite. While the soviet union put a man by the name of Yuri Gagarin who was the first man to orbit earth. Buzz Aldrin was the first man to land on the moon. -
Soviet War in Afganistan
Christmas eve The Soviet Union began an invasion of Afghanistan, it's central neighbor Asia.They air dropped elite troops into the cities. In days the K.G.B had infiltrated the Afghan palace they then went onto poisoning the prime minister. -
Soviets Downing the 007 Flight
The Boeing 747 was intercepted and shot down due to a mistake by the pilots who accidentally traveled into prohibited airspace due to a navigation mistake to where the place happened to drift. All 269 people on board died. -
Able Archer Military Excercise
Nato conducted Able Archer 83 a war game that realistically modeled a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union. Tensions rising this exercise raised the risk of accidental nuclear war.
