    Olmecs

    From 1200 to 100 BCE, the Olmecs "the rubber people" were the most influential peoples of the Americas. They were the first civilization in the Western hemisphere. Their staple crop was maize and had collosal head statues.

    Greece

    From 800-338 B.C.E., the Medeterranian reigion was dominated by the polis city-states of Greece. Sparta was militaristic, Athens was intellectual, they fought in the peleponnesian wars, and the spartans won. They were a polytheistic people, and Athens was a democracy.

    Height of the Achemenid Empire

    In 553 BCE, Cyrus initiated a rebelion against the Median Overlord. He seized a bunch of land and soon ruled form India to the Egypt border. Cambyses (son of Cyrus) then conquered Egypt. Darius was the great administrator of the empire. He divided the realm into satrapies and also helped bring about a 2575 km road and courier service. When Xerces came to power, he tried to impose his Persian and Zoroastrian identity on conquered lands which led to rebellion.

    Parthian Empire

    From 447 BCE to 224 CE the Parthians, based in Iran to Mesopotamia, ruled Perisa. They had a less centralized government and clan leaders.

    Sasanian Empire

    224 BCE to 651 CE: The last empire in the Persian area before the rise of Islam. They were able to defeat some Romans and gain a buffer zone.

    Han

    From 25 to 225 C.E. the later Han Dynasty regained control, centralized administration, and reorganized the state beuracracy. They invaded North Vietnam and Korea and subjected them to Han rule. There was an imperial confucist university, but the government was legalist.

    Maya

    From 300-1100C.E.Mayan society flourished, they built more than 80 large ceremonial centers in the lowlands, most notably Tikal. Chichenitza was the only city that lasted past 800 C.E. The mayan are most remembered for their almost accurate calendar, ball game, writing system and ritual sacrifice.

    Gupta

    From 320-550 C.E., the Gupta empire was in power. Chandra gupta layed the foundation for the empire.The empire was prosperous and had little crime. Child marraige for girls was common.

    Christianity developed in Rome from Jewish followers of Jesus of Nazareth although initially persecuted by Roman authority, it became the state religion and spread via silkroads and spread through the reigion. The silk roads linked cultures that normally would not have interracted together, so trade, religion, and diseaseincreased exponentially.

    A change and continuity over time found in the classical period was the decline of empires due to internal conflict. For example, Rome's Baracks emperors casued instablity. For another example, the Han dynasty collapsed due to peasant uprisings, militaristic takeover, and corrupt government. Now, the previous government in Syria collapsed due to corruption.

    The classical period was charactarized by the creation of empires, their growth and development, and their eventaul collapse. The persian empire conquered much of the reigion near Iran. The Roman empire conquered through war led by the leigions, accepted beliefs of the people they conquered, and had a long period of success. Han dynasty took over North Vietnam and Korea but the dynasty eventually collapsed due to class conflicts.

    Selucid Empire

    The Selucids were a Hellenistic empire in the former region of the Persian empire. They faces oppositon from native Persians and ruling classes.

    Ptolemaic Kingdom

    305 BCE to 30 CE; the Hellenistic kingdom including Egypt that was especially economically prolific. Cleopatra was a pharoah here.

    Maurya

    From 321-185B.C.E. the Mauryan dynasty existed. Chandragupta Maurya was the first to unify India and conquerd Bactria. He built a beuracratic administrative system, and then became a monk. the high point of the empire was Ashoka Maurya's rule.

    Qin

    From to 221 to 207 C.E. the Qin dynasty was short lived but established long term traditions in China. Qin Shihuangdi ordered execution of his criticers and the burning of books. Mass conscription for building projects like his tomb led to the dissolvement of the dyansty.

    Carthage

    814 BCE to 180 BCE. Located near modern day Tunis, Carthage was one of the only empires started by a woman. It evolved from a Phoenician colony. Carthage was destroyed after the 3 Punic wars.

    Rome

    From 509 B.C.E. to 476 C.E. Rome dominated the western half of the eastern empire. They started as a republic but became a dictatorship. Some notable figures include Julius and Augustus Casesar and Diocletian. The period of relative roman peace was called Pax Romana.
