  • Civil War Beginning

    Civil War began on March 23rd, 1991. The cause of the war was the Revolutionary United Front interfering Sierra Leone in an attempt to overthrow the Momoh government.

  • ULIMO ( The United Movement of Liberia ) Arises

    ULIMO ( The United Movement of Liberia ) arises as a guirilla force to stop cooperation between Sierra Leone rebel leader Foday Sankoh and Charles Taylor.

  • RUF takes over Sierra Leone diamond areas

    RUF takes over Sierra Leone diamond areas. The capital Freetown is threatened. At this point, over 50,000 people have been killed.

  • Private Army

    Sierra Leone hires a private army to battle rebels.

  • New President

    Ahmad Tejan Kabbah is elected president, and rebels chop off hands of the voters the oppose.

  • Truce

    Sierra Leone reaches a truce with rebels after five years of war and seek a permanent peace accord.

  • 1 Million Displaced

    Nearly 1 million displaced people have settled in camps around the capital, Freetown

  • War Ends!

    War has officially ended starting January 18th, 2002
