    The Ming dynasty decided that they would isolate China from the rest of the world due to their fear of people around the world since they had different social systems.

    China invited the Manchus into China to protect from the bandits. Manchus instead chose to invade China being that they were at a political crisis.

    After 20 years of war with China, the Manchu's manage to defeat China. Though it was a struggle, They tookk the dynasty name Qing and managed to rule more land than most dynasties.

    Merchants were trading amongst china and other countries, so they began to have a new group, the compradors. As more trading occurred, it led to more connections to Europe.

    When the Manchus came to China, their main goal was a non-Chinese culture. The Taiping Rebellion was meant to get rid if all Chinese culture.

    Taiping fighters won against the Qing forces, which shows that their military was not very disciplined and powerful. The taipings captured territory in south-central of China and established a capital at Nanjing.

    Europe was beginning to become dissatisfied with China because China wasn't following the orders of Europe. Thus, another war occurred and china lost again. They were then forced to rade with Europe.

    The Self-Strengthning Movement
    This movement is when the Manchu Dynasty tried to get their things together. They encouraged Western investment in railways and factories in areas they governed, they also modernized their armies. This would enrish the economy, and make a better military.

    This was due towards the end of the 2nd Opium war when Europe forced China to trade with them.

    She took over the throne. Husband died (widow). She defied the Westernizers by using the raised funds to build modern warships.

    Boxers wanted to drive Europeans and Japanese out of China. They slaughtered Christian missionaries and seized control of foreign embassis. They lost, and were forced to sign the Boxer Protocol, which was that China not only had to pay the Europeans and Japanese but also had to formally apologize.

    Civil Service Exams were put to an end because of the corruption happening. Empress Cixi concluded that solutions to China's predicament could no longer be found in Confucian learning the exams tested.
