A major earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.5, hits Tangshan China with a major aftershock 15 hours later. Official death tolls reached 242,769 people. Effects of earthquake could be even be seen in Beijing.

Mao Zedong dies of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and breathing problems due to smoking. After his death, Mao's wife and a group of the Chinese Communist Party officials, nicknamed "The Gang of four," fight for power but are eventually arrested.
