The colony was located between the Brazos and Colorado Rivers. Each family living there received 177 acres of land and they didn't have to pay taxes for 10 years.

Austin had traveled to Mexico City late in 1833 to present petitions for greater self-government for Texas to Mexican president Antonio L pez de Santa Anna. Austin had argued with Santa Anna for self-gov-ernment for Texas, but without success.

In 1834, Austin won a repeal of the prohibition on immigration. By 1835, more than 1,000 Anglos each month streamed into Texas, scrawling the initials

Spanish troops occupied the abandoned building, the Alamo, and used it as a fortress. Then almost 200 Texans attacked to try and siege the Alamo, but after 13 days of fighting, the Texans died.

On the morning of the April 19, the Texans crossed over and marched down the right bank of Buffalo Bayou to within half a mile of its confluence with the San Jacinto River. The Texas army had about 750 men. Within a short time, 700 Mexicans were slain, with another 730 taken as prisoners. The battle for Texas was won.

Zachary Taylor positioned his troops at the Rio Grande. Mexico responded by sending their forces to the Rio Grande to gain its territory back.

John Slidell was sent to Mexico to purchase California and New Mexico and to gain approval of the Rio Grande as Texas' border. When Slidell arrived there, Mexican officials refused to see him.

The idea of Texas being annexed by the U.S. was proposed by Sam Houston in 1838. On December 29, 1845, Texas became the 28th state in the Union.

James Marshall discovered gold at Sutters Mill. He discovered it while working as a carpenter on John Sutter's property.

The United States and Mexico signed this treaty. Mexico agreed that the Rio Grande would be Texas' border and that the U.S. could control California and New Mexico. In return, the United States agreed to pay Mexico $15 million. The treaty also guaranteed freedom to the Mexicans living there.

American forces invaded New Mexico, the California Republic, and parts of what is currently Northern Mexico. The US won the war and it resulted in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

California was admitted as a free state. This created a renewal of sectional tension because California's admission into the Union threatened to upset the balance of power in Congress.

President Franklin Pierce sent James Gasden to pay Mexico $10 million for more territory south of the Gila River. This established the border of U.S. and Mexico
