Catherine the Great

  • Birth

    Catherine the Great was born on May 2, 1729 into a family of German royalty. Her birth name was Sophie Friederike Auguste.
  • Marrying into Russian Royalty.

    At 15 years old, Catherine married the Grand Duke Peter of Russia who was in line for the throne.
  • Death of Elizabeth

    Elizabeth was the Empress of Russia. She died, leaving Peter as the heir to the throne.
  • Becomes the Ruler of Russia

    After Catherine's husband Peter became the czar, Catherine had him arrested because he was mentally unstable and she became the ruler of Russia.
  • Finalizing the Nakaz (est.)

    The Nakaz was a document that illustrated how the country should run, and it focused on ideas that all men should be treated equally, and that capital punishment should be stopped. This document was put under commission and even though no laws came from that commission, the ideas are present in current Russian laws today.
  • Expanding of Russia (est.)

    The Russo-Turkish war of 1768 - 1774 ended with Russia gaining a lot of land and privileges. Russia became in conrtol of Sothern Ukrane, the Northern Caucasus, and the Crimea. Russia also gained peace with Turkey and access to use the Turkish waters of the Black Sea.
  • Death

    Catherine the Great died and her son Paul took her place as the czar of Russia.
