  • Shelburne race riots

    in 1784 tensions were at an all-time high between white residents of Shelburne and black of Birchtown. with few possessions and no land, many black people were forced to work for whites, basically selling themselves back into enslavement to feed themselves and there family's witch was not much diffrent from why they had fled america.

    on July 26th 1784, a group of white loyalists destroyed baptist Minister David George's home in shelburne.
  • black loyalists frustrated with there situation

    in 1792, around 1,200 black loyalists, frustrated with there situation in towns like Birchtown, Annapolis royal, Halifax and Shelborne departed for sierra Leone, west Africa. the maroons from Jamaica eventually joined the loyalists in sierra Leone . Freetown, sierra Leone was established in 1796.
