    IN 1619 THE FIRST BLACK SLAVES WERE DEPORTED TO AMERICA FROM ANGOLA.THEY WERE SOLD IN JAMESTOWN,IN VIRGINIA.
  • 1775: Benjamin Franklin was the first president of the Pennsylvanian society

    In 1775 Benjamin Franklin was the first president of the Pennsylvanian Society, that fought for the abolition of slavery in America.
  • 1777: Vermont abolished the slavery

    Vermont was the first state to abolish slavery in 1777.
  • 1852: Harriet Beecher Stowe published her book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, the first novel against slavery

    In 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe published her book “Uncle Tom’s Cabin”, the first novel against slavery. It’s about a slave killed by his master. In the same year, an anti-slavery organization was created : the UNDERGROUND RAILWAY. It helped slaves to escape, crossing the border into Canada.

  • 1920: JAZZ and BLUES became really popular.

    The Harlem Renaissance was a famous cultural movement in the 1920s. JAZZ and BLUES became really popular. LOUIS ARMSTRONG and DUKE ELLINGTON were famous jazz and blues musicians.
  • 1939: BILLIE HOLLIDAY, the great jazz and blues singer, recorded the song “ Strange Fruit”

    In 1939 BILLIE HOLLIDAY, the great jazz and blues singer, recorded the song “ Strange Fruit”, about blacks lynched by the Ku Klux Klan ( a hate group against African- Americans, Jews and Immigrants) in the Southern States.
  • 1956: a Black woman, named ROSA PARKS, was arrested because she didn’t give her bus seat to a white man on a bus, in Montgomery, Alabama

  • 1963: M. L. King led a big MARCH IN WASHINGTON.

    Martin Luther King was the leader of the black civil rights movement. Black civil activists, led by M. L. king, started a protest, after Rosa Parks’arrest; they boycotted all city buses and after one year the segregation laws on buses were abolished. In 1963, M. L. King led a big MARCH IN WASHINGTON.
  • 1964: MARTIN L. K. WON NOBEL PRIZE FOR PEACE

    “ I HAVE A DREAM” IS M. L. KING’S FAMOUS SPEECH: HIS DREAM WAS A SOCIETY WHERE BLACKS AND WHITES WILL LIVE LIKE BROTHERS AND SISTERS AND WHERE BLACK PEOPLE WON’T BE JUDGED BY THE COLOR OF THEIR SKIN BUT BY THE CONTENT OF THEIR CHARACTER.
  • 1965: the black activist Malcom X was assassinated.

    In 1965, the black activist Malcom X was assassinated. “ X “ represented the unknown African name of his ancestors.
  • 1968: MARTIN L. K. WAS ASSASSINATED.

  • 1971: Ali became World Champion.

    Muhammad Ali, a champion boxer, refused to join the Vietnam War in 1967 and he was banned from boxing. In 1971 Ali became World Champion.
  • 1993: the Nobel Prize for Literature was won by the African-American TONI MORRISON.

  • 1994: Nelson Mandela, an anti -apartheid activist, became the FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT in South Africa

  • 2010: BARACK OBAMA became the first Afro-American president of the USA.
