    Bay of Pigs
    The Bay of Pigs- President Eisenhower gave the CIA permission to secretly train Cuban exiles for an invasion of Cuba. The CIA and the exiles hoped it would trigger a mass uprising that would overthrow Castro. Kennedy learned of the plan only nine days after his election. Although he had doubts, he approved it. This started the tension between the U.S.A and Communist countries

    Some 1,300 to 1,500 Cuban exiles supported by the US military landed on the island’s southern coast at Bahia de Cochinos, the Bay of Pigs. The attack failed miserably and Kennedy publicly took the blame for the fiasco. Kennedy negotiated with Castro for the release of surviving commandos and paid a ransom of $53 million in food and medical supplies. Although Kennedy warned that he would resist further Communist expansion in the Western Hemisphere, Castro defiantly welcomed further Soviet aid.

    Cubans and Soviets = Allies
    Castro announces that he is allied with the Soviet Union and any threat on Cuba is a threat on the Soviet Union. The flow of soviet weapons into Cuba, including nuclear missiles, increased greatly. Kennedy responded saying that America would not tolerate the nuclear weapons. This summer made tensions between the United States and Cuba and the Soviet Union.

    Photographs taken by American planes revealed Soviet missile bases in Cuba, and some contained missiles ready to launch. Provided hard evidence that the Soviets had nuclear missiles in Cuba. The joint chiefs of staff strongly advise Kennedy to make an air strike. This made tensions between Russia and the United States very strong because it made it a very real and close possibility of nuclear war.

    Kennedy informed nation of the Soviet missiles sites in Cuba and of his plan to remove them. Any missile attack from Cuba would trigger and all-out attack on Soviet Union. The next six days the nation was terrified for the possibility of a nuclear war. Soviet ships stopped to avoid a confrontation at sea. Soviets relationship with the US was effected because the U.S. couldn’t believe the Soviets.

    Kennedy implements a naval “quarantine” of Cuba. By blocking Soviet ships from reaching the island. Soviet Union had launched sputnik 22, with intentions of making a flyby of mars and sending pictures back to earth. When they reignited the engines the satellite exploded and debris fell back to earth for the next 4 months.

John Steinbeck wins Nobel Peace Prize in Literature. Stevenson demanded USSR to answer regarding the crisis, and said “I am willing to wait for my answer until hell freezes over. The relationship between America and Russia lighten.
  • Secret Agreement

    Secret Agreement
    JFK and Kruhshchev make a secret agreement to deactivate the nuclear weapons in Cuba. Kruhshchev deactivates the missiles in Cuba. Over Radio Moscow, Kruhshchev announces that they have been deactivated. This is the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis. USSR presents nuclear test in Eastern Kazakh. Tensions between the United States and Cuba come to an end
