However, Mustafa Kemal took his first step towards his rise to power when he did the opposite of what he was ordered to do: instead of handling the crisis, Kemal joined the nationalist movements, united them and with time became the head/leader.

    The Grand National Assembly abolish sultanate and divide caliphate. The caliphate lost political legitimacy and therefore became a mere religious authority. Thus, giving Ataturk absolute power as leader of Turkey. Significance #2: Through the abolotiion of the Sultainate, Ataturk gains complete leigitimacy as leader. He terminated the caliphate as a politicallly influential sector of the government, it looses it's poltical authority and thus modernizing the nation.
