Rome Is Founded

753 BCE

Rome was founded by Romulus and Remus located beside the Mediterranean Sea. Romulus and Remus were twin brothers, and legend has it that a she-wolf raised them by feeding them with her milk.

Rome Becomes A Republic

509 BCE

The last king was removed and Rome was then ruled by senators. Rome created a Constitution with laws and became a complex republican government.

First Punic War (264 BC – 241 BC)

264 BCE

The First Punic War started in 264 BC and ended in 241 BC. It was fought between Ancient Carthage and the Roman Republic.

Second Punic War (218 BC – 201 BC)

218 BCE

Also known as the Hannibalic War, The Second Punic War was also fought between Carthage and Rome. It started in 218 BC and ended in 201 BC.

Third Punic War (149 BC – 146 BC)

146 BCE

The Third Punic War was the last of the Punic Wars. The war was fought between the past Phoenician colony of Carthage and the Roman Republic. It started in 149 BC and ended in 146 BC.

Spartacus (Gladiator) Was Born

111 BCE

Spartacus was born in Thrace, 111 BC. He was a Thracian gladiator who escaped as a slave leader with many others in the Third Servile War.

Julius Caesar (Former Roman Consul) Was Born

100 BCE

Gaius Julius Caesar, but known as Julius Caesar, was born in Ancient Rome, in 100 BC. He was a Roman dictator, politician, general, and he was also a great author/ poet. After he became dictator of Rome in 45 BC, Julius was assassinated in 44 BC by his son.

Mark Antony (Roman Politician)

83 BCE

Marcus Antonius, but usually known as Mark Antony, was a Roman politician and general who had a huge role in the change of the Roman Republic to the Roman Empire. He was born in Ancient Rome, 83 BC, and he later died in 30 BC.

Augustus (Roman Emperor) Was Born

63 BCE

Augustus was born in Ancient Rome, 63 BC. He was the founder of the Roman Empire, as well as its first Emperor. Augustus ruled The Roman Empire since 27 BC until his death in 14 AD.

Romans Invade Britain

55 BCE

Roman General, Julius Caesar, invades Britain with two Roman legions.

Julius Caesar Becomes First Dictator

45 BCE

Julius Caesar defeats Pompey in a civil war and becomes the first dictator. This is when the Roman Republic ends.

Julius Gets Assassinated

44 BCE

Julius Caesar was assassinated by his own son, Brutus and his own senators, hoping to bring back the Republic but started the civil war instead.

Rome Becomes An Empire & Augustus Becomes Emperor

27 BCE

The Roman Empire began in 27 BC when Augustus Caesar becomes the first emperor of Rome. He became the emperor when the last one, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed by King Odoacer, a Germanic king.

Nero (Roman Emperor) Was Born

Nero was Roman Emperor, and the last in the Julio-Claudian dynasty, who ruled from 54 AD to 68 AD. He was born in 37 AD and died in 68 AD.

Titus (Roman Emperor) Was Born

Titus was Roman emperor, and a member of the Flavian dynasty, that ruled from 79 AD to 81 AD. He was born in 39 AD and died in 81 AD.

Nero Becomes Emperor

Nero was a Roman Emperor from 54 AD to 68 AD. He was also the last in the Julio-Claudian dynasty.

Rome Burns

Nero set fire to Rome and he then blamed the Christians that they did it. It is said that he was playing a lyre while watching much of Rome burn.

Constantine (Ruler) Was Born

Constantine, also known as Constantine the Great, was a Roman Emperor who ruled from from 306 AD to 337 AD. Constantine was born in 272 AD. He later died in Nicomedia, in 337 AD.

Christianity

The Edict of Thessalonica issued Christianity in 380 AD, making it the official religion of the Roman Empire.

The Roman Empire Is Divided

The Roman Empire was split by Theodosius in 395 AD. Rome split into two empires: The Western Roman Empire and The Eastern Roman Empire, and each empire had a different ruler.

The Roman Empire Falls

The Germanic leader, Odoacer, who was the first Barbarian to rule in Rome, overthrew Romulus, one of the last Roman emperors in the west.
