    Africa in the Age of The Slave Trade

    Although the building of forts, the shipments of slaves, and slavery continued throughout the fourteenth to part of the nineteenth century, eventually the change of slavery which was its abolishment was established during the middle of the nineteenth century which created a downfall in the economy and entirely replaced all that continued throughout the era.

    Shipment of Slaves

    During the date of 1441, the first shipment of slaves took place. Slaves were brought from Africa to Portugal. This event is an example of change over time because later in the era different shipments of slaves took place and the slave trade grew larger. For example, in 1713 the English got the right to import slaves. This event relates to the economic theme and the reason being is because the shipment of slaves is under the categroy of distribution which also refers to trade and commerce.

    Establishment of forts

    During 1481, Portuguese forts were established at El Mina in Africa in the heart of the gold-producing region. This fort establishment was significant because it provided a place for more slaves to be shipped to. This is an event of change over time because as time went on, different forts were established, such as the trading fort of Accra, and as more forts were created, slave trade increased. This event relates to the economic theme because it refers to the creation of forts and distribution.

    English Slave Trade

    On the date of 1562, the beginning of the English slave trade took place. The beginning of the slave trade brought forth an increased amount of work and profits. This is an event of continuity over time because it continued slavery and over time it brought forth a new and improved economy because of the profits and work done by slaves. This event relates to the economic theme because it contributes to the betterment of the economy and distribution which is the trading of slaves.
  • Chartered Royal African Company

    During the date of 1660, the English were eager for their own source of slaves for their growing colones in Barbados, Jamaica, and Virginia. So, they chartered the Royal African Company. This is an event of continuity because the French soon made similar arrangements. This event relates to the economic theme because it deals with the slaves and distribution.
  • Import of Slaves

    On the date of 1713, the English got the right to import slaves to the Spanish empire which was a relief to them because the English wanted to import slaves for awhile. This is an event of continuity because it continued slavery over time. This event relates to the economic theme because it refers to slavery and the further trading of slaves.
  • Port town of Whydah

    During the date of 1727, King Agaja seized the port town of Whydah which then attracted more slaves traders. This is an event of change because over time more port towns and territories were seized but soon slavery was abolished. This event relates to the economic theme because it relates to the the town and its attraction of slave traders which also refers to distribution.
  • Uprising of Slaves

    During 1792, the uprising of slaves in Haiti began. This uprising created a positive economic effect because the more slaves, the more work and profits. This event is an event of change over time because the uprsing of slaves did not last. Soon the abolishent of slavery was established. This event relates to the economic theme because it relates to slavery and slavery is what impacted the economy and decided how good or bad the economy ultimately was.
  • Britian Slave trade abolished

    During the time of 1807, the Britain slave trade was abolished. This is an event of change because when Britain abolished their slavery they pressured others along the Atlantic, Spain, and Portugal to abolish slavery. This event relates to the economic theme because the economy fell as the slave trade was abolished because without slaves, not as much work could be done.
  • Effect of Islamization

    During the date of 1840, the effect of Islamization was that new centers of trade were created in Western and central Sudan. The level of slave labor rose, slave vilages, and a plantation system developed. This is an event of change because during the 1800's slavery was also abolished. Although islamization was religious it had positive economic effects. This event relates to the economic theme because it created new centers of trade and labor rose.
  • Slavery became a prominent feature

    During the date of 1870, slavery became a prominent feature of the East African coast. This is an event of continuity because although slavery was already abolished as time went on slavery remained known to the people, and the harsh conditions that were endured was remembered. This event relates to the economic theme because it relates to the slave trade which refers to distribution.
