    African American Religion
    African Americans found that the whites could not take away thier freedom of spirituality and religion. Christianity became the main way of expressing their extreme desire of freedom and justice.
  • Transportation by Road

    Transportation by Road
    The federal government was committed to the improvment of road ways. The federal government funded the National Road ($7 million)
    The National Road wouldeventually tie the East and the West together.
    The east-west road, canal, and railroad helped create our national pride and identity.
  • Lowell Mills

    Lowell Mills
    Lowell and Moody made more efficient models on British models, which led to more discoveries and pursuits of inventing more efficient machinery. Lowell and Moody invented the loom, which made spinning cotton quicker and easier.
  • Shipping and Water Transportation

    DeWitt Clinton proposed the building of the Erie Canal
    Traveling and shipments of commercial goods was much quicker than traveling by roads. It was cheaper too.
  • Mechanization and Gender

    Mechanization and Gender
    Before industrialization, families worked within a web of organized systems, the patriarchial heirarchy system.
    The Industrial Revolution destroyed the system. In 1820, the garments industry broke down the system even more by employing mostly women to provide labor for relatively low wages.
  • Slave Revolts

    Slave Revolts
    Slave revolts and uprising were the ultimate resistance on plantations. The revolts caused the Southerners to fear the slaves and their ability to revolt and injure or even kill the whites.
  • Coercion and Violence

    Coercion and Violence
    Slave owners believed that by discipline, coercion, and violence, their slaves would work harder and fear them (the slave owners)
    Some slave owners beat their slaves so brutally that the slaves would sometimes die from infection, loss of blood, exhuastion and pain or just from being beaten to death.
  • Election of 1828

    Election of 1828
    Andrew Jackson, the leader of the "Jackass" party, was elected (with the help of Martin Van Buren) president of the United States. The campaign war between John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson was the dirtiest one in its history.
    Jackson won by 56% of the popular vote and the electoral majority of 178 votes, compared to Jonh Quincy Adams' 83%.
  • Indian Removal Act

    Indian Removal Act
    Jackson authorized moving all Native Americans to "Indian Territory" (Oklahoma), which goes against the Supreme Court Ruling.
    The U.S Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, which provided funding for the removal and relocation of the indian tribes and would remove the tribes by force if neccessary.
    Some tribes resist removal and revolt, causing big problems and the U.S army to use extreme force to get the tribes to move without causing the problems.
  • Nat Turner's Revolt

    Nat Turner's Revolt
    Nat Turner led five other slaves in a revolt, killing his master Travis. Over the coarse of the night, the number of slaves (rebels) grew to a total of sixty who moved from plantation to plantation killing a total of fifty-five white people.
    Nat Turner and forty other rebels were executed after the revolt.
  • Nullification Crisis

    Nullification Crisis
    South Carolina threatens to suceed over protective tariffs. Andrew Jackson threatens to use force to enforce the law. In other words, South Carolina attempted to nullify federal law and failed.
  • The Bank War

    The Bank War
    Andrew Jackson believed that the bank represented Northern power. He set out to "kill it". He vetoed the early re-charter of the bank, which led to his re-election.
    The bank closed, the money was put into state banks, which leads to the financial panic of 1837.
  • "Gag Rule"

    "Gag Rule"
    Southerners introduced the "gag rule" to prevent the consideration of abolitionist petitions. The South wanted to prevent open discussions about abolishing slavery. The "gag rule" prevented the discussions of slavery in favor of the South.
  • Slave Justification

    Slave Justification
    The South stops apologizing for slavery, they justify slavery and deny that it is evil. It is a "social neccesity"- James Henry Hammond
  • The Panic of 1837

    The Panic of 1837
    Inflation of the economy. State banks gave out many loans and the price of cotton rose.
    Paper money was being printed, which created inflation, a six recession.
