These are close to the floppy disc, but better. The discs used lasers that heated up the bits on the disc, after which a magnet would change the bit's polarity according to what was being written, thereby storing the information. They could be rewritten up to one million times. -

Intel Paragon
Caltech built the Intel Paragon computer, and it became operational in 1992 and was the fastest super computer. It had cost nearly $500,000,000 to build. Paragon systems were used in many scientific areas, including atmospheric and oceanic flow studies, and energy research. -
Apple enters the Handheld market
Apple creates their first handheld device called, the Newton. The president of Apple, John Scully, dubbed it the "Personal Data Assistant". This pioneered many of the handheld computers that came in the later years. -
SanDisk creates the CompactFlash
SanDisk created the CompactFlash which is a portable memory card. It helped with the advancement of video cameras and still cameras, and we still use the technology today. -
Compact Disc-ReWritable (CD-RW)
The CD-RW!!! This allowed the consumer to store and backup files, and gave them the ability to transfer them from different devices. I use to put so much music on these.
