    Tallinn was first marked down on a map in 1154 by an Arab geographer al-Idrisi, its name being Kolyvan.
  • Jan 1, 1219

    The Danes conquered northern Estonia.

    The Danes, led by King Valdemar II, conquered northern Estonia in 1219 and when they were about to lose a bloody battle, they allegedly obtained their national flag - Dannebrog.
  • Jan 1, 1227

    The Knights of the Sword took Tallinn from the Danes.

    The Knights of the Sword made Toompea their fortress.
  • Jan 1, 1285

    Tallinn joined Hanseatic League

    Tallinn joined the German-Dominated Hanseatic league and became a junction of trade between the East and the West.
    Salt was the main trading commodity.
  • Sweden took control over the whole of Estonia

    The period was called the "Good old Swedish era." The foundation was laid for the Estonian school system, peasants were granted rights to own property, etc.
  • The Northern War began

    Russia started the Northern War in 1700. Peter the great had made his aim to conquer Estonia and open a window into Europe. Thousands of fatalities. Estonia remained under Russian rule and the Baltic-German nobility vowed allegiance to the czar.
  • The indpendence manifesto.

    On 24 February 1918, the Independence Manifesto was proclaimed in Tallinn, followed by Imperial German occupation and a war of independence with Russia.
