  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    Jefferson negotiated what was, at the time, the largest real estate deal. He purchased the territory that extended from current day Louisiana and extended northward for $5 million from the French.
  • Robert Fultons First Steam Ship

    Robert Fulton sailed the first Steam Ship. This allowed for both upstream and downstream trade to become possible and helped fuel the growth of the cotton industry in the south.
  • War of 1812 begins

    Congress voted to take military action against the British in response to impressment of American merchant sailors and to maintain our position as a trade partner in the global economy.
  • New Orleans Reaches Pennslvania

    The steamship New Orleans was the first ship to navigate internal waters to reach the eastern seaboard. This was a massive step forward in the cotton trade.
  • Treaty of Ghent signed

    The Treaty of Ghent was signed which marked the end of the War of 1812. Several weeks after this treaty Andrew Jackson claimed victory against the British in New Orleans despite the official end of the war.
  • New Cotton Strain discovered

    Gossypium Barbadense was discovered. This strain of cotton was easier to grow and process and spurred on the southern cotton industry.
  • Erie Canal Completed

    This opened new shipping opportunities and allowed goods to be transported to the west more easily than before
