    The French defeated the Austrian Empire, but suffered the first major defeat of Napoleon's career, leading to the undermining of French military superiority and the Napoleonic image.

    Napoleon's forces suffer a crushing defeat at the hands of the Russians, in part due to the Russian winter. The French captured Moscow before being forced to retreat.
