On this day, the members of the German Parliament met in the Kroll Opera House in Berlin and passed Hitler's Enabling Act, officially called 'Law for Removing the Distress of the People and the Reich.' It ended German democracy and began Hitler's dictatorship.

Adolf Hitler became Fuhrer of Germany on August 19, 1934. Following a technically illegal law assigned by Hitle, the German Officers' Corps and every participant in the German Army swore an oath of allegiance to Hitler, followed by many other acts and oaths performed by the German public.

On this day, the Nuremberg Race Laws of 1935 took away the rights of German Jews, giving them the status of "subjects" in Hitler's Reich. Two of these laws were "The Law for the Protection of German Blood and German Honor" (regarding Jewish marriage) and "The Reich Citizenship Law" (designating Jews as subjects).
