    Slaves diminishing progress

  • Anthony Johnson acquires land

    Anthony Johnson acquires land
Anthony the negro acquires land in Nothhampton County. This is quite a feat considering he started out with nothing. Anthony Johnson came over to colonial Virginia as an indentured servant and worked his was through his time of service and then became a free man. After he bought his land he also bought a white servant and became a farmer. This shows that if you work hard your will be a functional member of society and not judged by the color of their skin at this point in time.
  • Act III

    Act III
Act III states that baptisme of slaves does exempt them from bondage. What this means is that even if a slave is baptizd and becomes a Christian, he or she is not free by default. This is a big blow to slaves because it takes away another chance for freedom. This may make many enslaved people sad because it is now even harder to become a free man. The white slave owners really dislike the African American enslaved population because they are becoming worried that they might loose some power.
  • Act I

    Act I
The casual killing of slaves. This act makes it legal to kill any of your slaves if you think it is nesseccary and your do not need a good reason. This law takes away the negroes right to live and makes it unsafe to be a slave. The worst part is if you are a slave you cannot run away to freedom because if they catch you and return you, your master can kill you then. It is just like a trap because there is a good chance that if you mess up in any way that they will kill you.
  • Act I cont.

    Act I cont.
This law really shows diminishing progress because it takes the basic right to live away from enslaved African Americans. Now enslaved people are even less to slave owners because they see them as an item, not as a human being. To owners if one isn't working they can get rid of them just like a toy.
  • Act IV

    Act IV
No Negroes or Indians are able to buy Christian servants. This is bad news for slave owner, like Anthony Johnson, because he will be forced to free any of his slaves that are Christian. This is unfair to the minority men because this law does not affect the white man negatively. White men put this law into effect because thay thought they were better than African Americans and wanted them to know it. This is just another way to show thair power over freed Africans.
  • Chap. XXII

    Chap. XXII
An act declairing the Negro, Mulatto, and Indian slaves within this dominion, to be real estate. This act is what ends it, slaves are no longer human beings to white people anymore, They see them as their property not as a helper. This means that people can buy and sell slaves as they please, just like food or other goods. They are treating them like they are worth nothing and they do not even care of they die because they will simpily buy another slave.
