Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana Purchase was bought for us by the third president, Thomas Jefferson. It added about 828,000 sq. miles to the United States. It cost us about 15 million dollars which is about 4 cents an acre. Napoleon Bonaparte, the French leader, sold it to us because he was in great debt because of the war. This purchase almost doubled our entire country and was big for the idea of Manifest Destiny -
Corps of Discovery
The Corps of Discovery was a group of explorers who were sent out to explore the west. Lewis and Clark were apart of this group. They were sent to find a passage way to the Pacific ocean. This was because the United States wanted an easier way to trade with China. Only 2 people died out of the four year expedition. They found lots of new species of plants and animals that we know of today. -
War of 1812
The War of 1812 was a war that people forgot about. The nicknames for this war are The Forgotten War, The Revolutionary War Part 2, and The War of Poor Communication. Andrew Jackson, later the 7th U.S. president, was the commander. They say he was a hero for the War of 1812. The Battle of New Orleans, the last battle of the War of 1812, wasn't even supposed to happen. Thats why they call it the War of Poor Communication. The British tried to stop the war but we didnt get the memo. -
The Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was made by the 5th president, James Monroe. The basic idea of the Monroe Doctrine is that America doesnt want any European countries to interfere with North or South America. Americans didn't want the Europeans to take over South America and become more powerful than us. If they did, they would most likely rule us today. There were many cartoons showing Uncle Sam, U.S. mascot, telling European nations to stay away. the Monroe Doctrine is pretty important to the U.S. today. -
Indian Removal Act/Trail of Tears
The Indian Removal Act was started by the 7th president, Andrew Jackson. The Indian Removal Act was when America forced Native Americans out of their homes, all the way to Oklahoma. This was called the Trail of Tears. Five major tribes forced to move no matter what. Some Seminole Indians tried to hide and stay in Florida. Andrew Jackson's forces found them, and forced them to move. Tons of Indians died on the trail. The Indian Removal Act was passed by Congress so its their fault too. -
Florida Territory
The Florida Territory was once ruled by Spain and the Native Americans. James Monroe sent Jackson to Florida to find runaway slaves. Jackson then decided to move all the tribes out of Florida to Oklahoma after the treaty was signed. Andrew told Monroe that he was going to invade Florida, then the Spanish surrendered at their forts. After all this, the Adams-Onis Treaty was signed by the Spanish and Americans giving us Florida for 5 million dollars. -
Texas
Texas was first ruled by Mexico for a long time. Texas then started to dislike Mexico and the leader of Mexico, Santa Anna, wanted to have war. Texas then became its own country as the Republic of Texas. Santa Anna started the war and then the Alamo was born. that was the first battle and Texas lost badly. Texas eventually won and asked the United States if they could be apart of the Union. Texas later was cut down to their today size because they were through Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. -
Mexican American War/Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago
The Mexican American War was a war over todays Southeast America. Santa Anna still thought that Texas was Apart of Mexico. Santa Anna decided it was time to fight over the land. We took over the North of Mexico but Santa Anna kept going. After we took over Mexico City Santa Anna gave up and sold us the land for 15 million dollars. The treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo was signed and gave us California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah. -
Oregon Territory
What was once a huge territory, almost cut in half by America and Britain. The Oregon Territory originally spread from present Oregon to present Southwest Canada. It now includes Idaho, Oregon, Washinton, and small parts or Montana. America wanted it to help fulfill our dream of reaching the west coast and more land for settlers. When it was still its big size, America wanted all of it and we said, "54, 40 or fight," which ment we wanted all of it or war would start.
