Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assasinated by a member of the Black Hand, Gavrilo Princip was the assasin. Ferdinand and his wife were killed in their open car when they were leaving town. -
Austria declared war on Serbia
The Austrian government blamed Serbia for the assasination of Franz Ferdinand and his wife. For that reason Austria declared war on Serbia. -

Germany declares war on France. German troops poured into Belgium as directed under the Schleiffen Plan, drawn up in 1905. British foreign secretary sent an ultimatum to Germany, Germany did not withdrawl. -

Germany did not withdraw form Belgium and Britain declared was on Germany. Belgium was a nuetral country, and Britain felt that Germany invaded Belgium's nuetrality. -

The Russian army marched into Prussia. The battle was a heavy defeat for Russia with thousands of men killed and 125,000 taken prisoner. Although Germans won the battle, 13,000 men were killed. -

After defeating the second Russian army, the Germans truned their attention to the first Russian army. Although the Germans were unable to defeat the army completely, over 100,000 Russians were taken prisoner. -

Turkey entered the war on the side of the central powers and gave help to a German naval bombardment of Russia. -

***Paul visits Kemmerich***
Kemmerich is Paul's classmate, Kemmerich's health is slowly declining because he just had his leg amputated. -
***Paul's Company Returns to the Front***
The men return to the front to lay down barbed wire. While hiding in a graveyard, they shield themselves. -
Second Battle of Ypres
Many Bristish casualties were claimed when the Germans were the first to be use poison gas. -
Lusitania sunk
Americans were outraged when a German submarine sunk the Lusitania with many American people onboard. -
Italy enters war
Italy enters the war on the side of the Allies. -
***Talk about the end of the war***
Paul and his fellow comrades talk of what they will do once the war is over. This is very important because it shows how much Paul and his friends have no clue what is going on outside of war. -
***A bloody trench battle***
Men fight in trenches infested with rodents. Paul runs into Himmelstoss in one trench and Paul realizes he is a coward. -
Battle of Verdun
Germans attack the French, the battle lasted 9 months and was deemed inconclusive. Germans lost 430,000 men and the French 540,000. -
Battle of Somme
Germans make a long artillery attack hoping to eliminate barbed wire, instead they make no mans land full of craters and mud. The battle lasted five months.There were 420,000 British soldiers killed (60,000 on the first day), 200,000 French soldiers and 500,000 German soldiers all for a total land gain of just 25 miles. -
***Paul visits home***
Paul gets a 14 day leave to go home and see his family, when he does he feels awkward. He learns his mother is dying of cancer, and can't adjust back to the civilian life even if it is just for a few weeks. -
***Paul's return back***
Paul returns back to the front only to help the Russians. The Russian prisoners were given cigarettes and food from Paul because he realizes they are people just like himself. -
USA declares war on Germany
Since Germany decided to sink American ships by U-Boat, the USA declared war on Germany. -
***Paul kills French soldier***
Paul stabs a French soldier wehn he jumps in the foxhole with him. He realized he owuld have to wait unitl morning to leave because it wasn't safe, so he talked to the soldier and feels some regret. This was the first time Paul had killed anyone in hand-to-hand combat. -
***Kropp gets his leg amputated***
After being injured, Paul and Kropp get put on the same medical train by bribery. Kropp becomes depressed because of the loss of his leg. -
***Detering and Kat die***
Kat dies when a piece of shrapnel slices his head oen. -
***Paul inhales poison gas***
During battle, Paul inhales poison gas and returns home once again. -
Battle of Amiens
During the four day Battle of Amiens, Germany surrendered and the city of Amiens had no windows left. -
***Paul dies***
Paul inhales poison gas and dies a month before peace is declared. -
Armistice signed
The Armistice was signed on November 11, 1919 at 11 am. This was an agreement to stop the fighting. This officially ended the war, Germany surrendered. We now celebrate Veterans Day in place of Armistice Day.
