    Under the control of Adolf Hitler, Germany wanted to expand it's empire and have Europe as it's own, this began on September 1st 1939 and was the beginning of the second world war. This would end up being the first event of ww2, and starting it. Canada declared war on Germany, 7 days after Britain and France. The first Canadian troops left for England in December. Although "obliged to go to war at Britain's side," King's delay of a week was a symbolic gesture of independence.

There were high tensions in the Pacific grew, so did the vulnerability of Hong Kong. Many Canadians were not trained and were sent out to war. The defense of Hong Kong was made at a great human cost. Approximately 290 Canadian soldiers were killed in battle and, while in captivity, approximately 264 were killed. for a total death toll of 554.
