Battling is the German and French at the Western Front. Despite appalling losses the french held the fort, with a battle lasting nine months with staggering casualties. The battle of Verdun ended up being one of the most horrific and deadliest battles in WW1 as well as the deadliest in warfare history, with a total approaching 1 million.
  • The First Tanks

    The First Tanks
The British issue the first ever battle tanks, at Delville Wood. Though they were could for removing setup defenses and shielding infantry they were still very primitive and did not make the best of weapons.
  • The Zimmerman Telegram

    The Zimmerman Telegram
A message found and given to us by a German Foreign secretary who went by the name Arthur Zimmerman. The message saying that if mexico goes to war with america and keeps them busy over on there side, the Germans said that if the Mexicans agreed they would give want land they lost (Texas,California, etc) from a while back. Mexico declined the offer and the citizens of the United States of America were very upset.
  • Submarines are Back

    Submarines are Back
Germany continues on with submarine warfare after there attack on the passenger ship that was smuggling supplies for Britain. They continue this act in more European Waterways, to try to weaken there naval strength on the water, or at least make them feel on guard at all times (have them jumping at the slightest thing).
  • U.S. joins the war against Germany

Congress Authorizes a declaration of war against Germany, along side, France, and Britain.
  • The Selective Service Act

This Act issued the draft in the beginnings of WW1 for the United States of America. President Wilson saw no other option and signed the Bill.
  • The Starting Line (VETERAN STORY)

Me and a buddy of mine that goes by the name of Harry Willard were thinking of joining the Army. We were thinking over it at supper and it was on my mind all the way through sleep and in the morning we made our thoughts and headed to the Armory at Troop B on New Scotland Avenue.
  • Nearing time to become fighting Men (VETERAN STORY)

All packed and waiting to go. We are getting our orders later this evening, we've got everything packed and ready to go on minutes notice.
  • The Battle of Belleau Wood

The first large scale battle fought by the American Soldiers. Marines backed by some U.S. Army Artillery launched many attacks into the forested area. The Germans attacked from the rear and the sides with machine guns, gas, explosives, etc, then finally the Americans prevailed on June 26. Though it was at a cost with nearly 10,000 dead, wounded, or missing in action.
  • All shot up (VETERAN STORY)

Still fighting, it is almost like there is no rest, actually there is no rest. After making it past the last river there is another river ahead and I sure hope that the Germans don't gas this one as much as the last. Our division is pretty banged up, we are so shot up that some of our engineer regiment had to get down in the trench and be Infantry. Everyone has to be ready for action mainly because of the more open shooting that has been going on since the enemy is on retreat.
  • Sick Dog (VETERAN STORY)

I am very sick in bed, praying that I can make it through the fever and the weather at one time. I am weak and ill not much I can do until I get better if I ever do.

The first few months he was around visiting and going to check ups from the base doctor because he was very sick over in Italy. Then after a long while of check ups and guard duty's he was honorable discharged.
  • The End of the war

The Treaty of Versailles ended WW1 and also cost a lot of money along the side for Germany because of all the destruction they had to end up paying for.
