The Sussex pledge was when Germany promises not to attack cargo, merchants, and passenger ships as long as British followed international law. Germany wanted to achieve victory without US involvement in war.

The French Passenger boat, the Sussex was torpedoed by the Germans in the English Channel. Several Americans were injured. Therefore, President Wison threatened to ambassadorial(diplomatic) relations with Germany. This ultimately led to the Sussex Pledge.

Espionage/Sedition Act was the imprisonment of people for speech that "underminded the war effort". These acts prohibited criticism against the US government, the US flage, and the Army and Navy uniforms.

An armistice, an agreement made by opposing sides in war to stop fighting for a certain time, was agreed upon and went into effect by the Russian government and the Central powers. The focus was no longer on the eastern front, but on the western front so Germany made one final attempt to defeat US and the remaining allies.

Russia signs the Treaty of Brest-Litousk with the Central Powers, abandoning the Allied war effort. This granted independence to its Polish and Baltic territories, the Ukraine, and Finland. All fighting is now focused on the western front which put a great deal of pressure on the remaining allies.
