Worldview Timeline

  • Period: 500 BCE to 500

    Classical

The Greeks and Romans found athleticism very important, which is why they created the Olympics. They believed in many different gods, and quite a few of the Roman gods were just copies of Greek gods, as a lot of the Roman culture was derived from Greek culture. They did believe in the afterlife, they believed in Elysium, the Fields of Asphodel, and the Fields of Punishment, which was their version of Heaven, Purgatory, and Hell.

    Classical
I chose this picture because it is a picture of Socrates, who was an important philosopher of the Classical time period and worldview. He was the mentor of Plato, who mentored Aristotle, who mentored Alexander the Great. Socrates was the beginning of a long line of philosophers who mentored important people in history.
  • Period: 500 to 1500

    Medieval

Faith is the most important thing in the Medieval worldview, life was all about glorifying God, and preparing yourself for the ‘next life’ trying to improve your current life, not your next one could even be looked down on.
  • Period: 1300 to

    Renaissance

The Renaissance was really about bringing back classical worldviews, but not completely abolishing the worldviews the Catholic church created. This created a good environment for the arts to flourish, and it brought Europe out of the ‘Dark Ages’. This mixing of worldviews also brought up a new focus on humanism.

    Medieval

    Medieval
I chose this book because I believe many of the characters in this book have a worldview similar to (if not exactly the same as) a Medieval worldview. Many of the characters are focused only on pleasing the goddess that they worship (Ungit) and religion is obviously a very important part of their lives. The same goes for Medieval people, they focused their lives entirely on God, and on religion, and it was looked down upon to do something to make your life in this world better.
  • Period: to

    Enlightenment

Mary Wollstonecraft, John Locke, and Thomas Hobbes all had big impacts on the world in their own ways. They each wrote amazing pieces that were well thought out, which is one of the reasons why they shaped the world the way they did. They were able to convey their message well, and in a way that you can understand well. The Enlightenment was a time with many very talented philosophers.
  • Renaissance

    Renaissance
I chose this picture because it is a picture of a sculpture by Michaelangelo, who was a famous artist during the Renaissance. He is often considered one of the most talented artists of the Italian Renaissance, he brought something new to the table with his art, and he received commissions from many important people such as popes, and other important figures that were associated with the Catholic Church.
  • Period: to

    Romantic

The Romantics focused on adventure a lot, and they were about connecting with who you really were, and knowing and finding out how you really feel. They were about throwing off social norms, and focused on their own emotions, and how it was to live on the sublime plain of living.
  • Enlightenment

    Enlightenment
I chose this painting because it's a painting of Mary Wollstonecraft, who was a philosopher during the Enlightenment time period. She wrote about equal rights for women, and she was an advocate for women. She represents this time period well because she is an example of just one of many great philosophers of this worldview.
  • Period: to

    Victorian

The Victorians try to see the beauty and the best in everything that they can, and they are very optimistic and idealistic in their literature and their art. They had very serious moral codes, and they brought religion into their everyday life a lot.
  • Romantic

    Romantic
I chose this painting because I believe it shows the Romantic spirit. It is of a young man who is setting out on a great adventure, and the Romantics valued adventure, and spontaneity, and I think this painting shows both of those things.
  • Victorian

    Victorian
I chose this picture because it shows a large piece of Victorian architecture. This building specifically shows how Victorian architecture is a rebirth of Gothic architecture, with its own elements and details added in.
  • Period: to

    Modern

The Modern worldview’s core value was progress, which means that they were focused on creating new things, and also new ways to view the world. They cared less about things like Nature and Being, and focused more on finding new ways to do things. During the turn of the 20th century people thought that the old way of doing things was a dead end culturally, because they saw how people’s values were changing in ways that they hadn’t before.
  • Modern

    Modern
( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=12j1wdKE4zU ) The piece I chose is Ives - Symphony No 4. I chose this piece to represent the Modern Worldview because I believe it shows the difference in Romantic music and Modern music. It shows how Modern music moves away from previous influence and really establishes itself as its own unique kind of music.
  • Period: to

    Post-Modern

The core value of Postmodernism is authenticity. This period was a time of questioning the ideas and values that are most often associated with a form of modernism that beliefs in progress and innovation. They don’t believe that the advances made in the Modern time period are progressive, because they believe that they don’t make us happier or better people.
  • Post-Modern

    Post-Modern
This is a piece called 'The Distinctive Line Between One Subject And Another' by John McEwen, in 1980. I chose this piece because I believe it shows the uniqueness of art in the Post-Modern worldview. Art from this worldview is different from other art, because it was a time of questioning the ideals and values of the Modern worldview.
  • Period: to

    Post Post-Modern

Post Post Modernism (Also referred to as Meta-Modernism or Transcendence) is more about how tech can help us fix problems that we have, and how it can help us improve ourselves. Some believe that it will happen through technology or biology (like DNA manipulation), or through spiritual awareness.
  • Post Post-Modern

    Post Post-Modern
This is the first out of 5 parts of this piece, called 'The Shirt' by Shelley Niro, done in 2003. This piece represents the Post Post-Modern worldview to me because it shows how a lot of people think in this worldview, and how that shows through their art. This is a piece about how Aboriginal people (Native Americans) were treated by European colonizers (very badly). This piece shows how people feel about it now, and how Aboriginal people are speaking up about it now through many forms like art.
